Volunteering in the Classroom

I had the wonderful opportunity today to volunteer in our son’s Kindergarten class. I had been meaning to do it earlier, but my schedule had simply been full. When I told him last week that I would be coming to his class this week, he instantly got excited. He’s still at that age where he wants me around! He has been counting down the days until today. So, the day came and it was a fantastic experience to see how his teacher teaches and then to help in whatever ways I could. It was interesting to see how our son interacted with the other children, and to see what kind of student he has become in the classroom. I even stayed and had lunch with him. It was so fun to see how independent he has become!

Try to plan some time to volunteer in each one of your children’s classes. They will love that you are taking the time to help out in their class and investing that time in them. It’s a great way to show them you support their learning and you are encouraging them to succeed. I found it was also a great way to get to know the other kids in his class so I can put faces to names when he talks about them. As far as our children making friends, I certainly want to know the kids as well!

Your child’s teacher will appreciate it as well. They do so much for our children and should be thanked for that. They spend more waking hours with our children than we do during the school year, so it’s nice to build a relationship with them as well. By doing so, you will feel more comfortable going to them with any concerns. So, pick a day and make it a date! It’s worth taking time off from work or arranging a sitter for your other little ones. Many other parents are willing to help swap child care as well so they can help out too. Just ask around!

  1. Does his school have a time for Grandparents Week or day. I really miss you so much. This is too sad. I love you all.
