Journal Prompts in a Jar

Writing in a journal is a great way for your child to fill a boring Saturday afternoon. Free writing helps develop creativity as well as language skills. Sometimes children have a hard time getting started. This is where a jar full of journal prompts becomes a handy tool.

Type up several journal prompts. These can be anything your child will enjoy writing about. Ideas may be: If I were an animal I would be a______. Or if I had one million dollars I would buy_________. Have fun and try to be creative yourself. Once you have several ideas typed up cut them into strips and put them in a jar.

The next time your child has a hard time thinking of something to write about have them draw a strip of paper from the jar. You’ll be amazed at the entires they will come up with.
